Only a month in and I’ve broken my new years vow to keep this thing updated. It’s been about a month after CAA and the dust has settled somewhat. February was hands down one of the busiest months, beginning the spring semester, CAA, MFA thesis show, birthdays, and attempting to find a schedule or routine has interrupted regular posting.
Aside from all of this, times have been tough at school. Governor Coumo has proposed a New York State budget that will have devastating effects on SUNY, particularly the Stony Brook, if passed. SUNY is being forced to tighten its belt, while no concrete figures on how much exactly needs to be saved, trimmed, or divined out of thin air; to keep afloat have been offered up. The stress of the disappearing budget alone is enough force a condensing cloud of malaise to hang low over Long Island. Yet, there are other contributing factors that have converged to swirl together a perfect storm of discontent. Let’s be honest, there is nothing comfortable about graduate school; seemingly insurmountable schedules, deadlines, requirements, and busy work keeping one from getting to the studio to do what she came to graduate school to do: make work. Oh, right, art.
