over the weekend i participated in an iron pour at the texas firehouse in long island city. i spent a day last week making the mold and working with a pretty cool resin sand material used in packing the pattern that becomes iron when the metal is poured. i will hopefully be able to learn more about this specific sand casting technique over the summer. but, i digress. so we poured the iron on saturday; the whole setup was on the sidewalk, with folks in full gear lining up the molds, tapping the iron, and pouring. pretty cool sight to see with the manhattan skyline as a back drop to the events. our pour was cut short when new york's finest showed up and had us call it a day. we still had the cupola full of metal that needed to be poured, so the firefighters and police gathered with rapt attention to see what exactly we were up to. once the last pot was poured they kindly asked us to clean up and clear out. sadly, not everyone's piece was cast. i was a lucky one that did get poured in the last round.
the folks at texas firehouse are hoping to get permits in order to pour again very soon. here's hoping that the process of paperwork and approval is a smooth one. one of the best things about the day was being a part of the pour and meeting a whole new group of people that love casting and sharing the experience. i met a wonderful new friend, nalani, who also attended stony brook, i look forward to casting and keeping in touch with her!
